Waffenrock (Bunte Rock)

The Waffenrock, commonly referred to as the bunte Rock, was the coloured tunic of the Imperial German Army before the widespread introduction of feldgrau uniforms. Its appearance varied considerably depending on regiment, branch of service, Armeekorps and period, with differences in wool colour, collars, cuffs, piping, buttons and shoulder boards.

Main pattern changes

The Waffenrock underwent several major modifications during its period of use:

• 1842 - introduction of the Waffenrock.
• 1867 - the earlier three-part red-dark blue-red collar was replaced by a uniformly red collar.
• 1895 - openings were introduced at the cuffs, together with a rear vent in the tunic.

Although the rear vent was officially introduced with the 1895 pattern, surviving examples show that this feature was already used on some earlier Waffenrocks. Such tunics can be found with the rear vent but still with the earlier, closed cuffs.

Waffenrock after 1907

Although feldgrau uniforms gradually replaced the Waffenrock for field service, the coloured tunics remained in use during the First World War, particularly for garrison, training and other duties away from the front. Earlier configurations may differ from those used during the wartime period, especially in regiments that were transferred between Armeekorps.

Construction details are based on period regulations, surviving examples and contemporary reference material. Different wool qualities, cuff patterns, collar shapes, piping arrangements and sewing techniques are available depending on the required version.
