Feldmantel M15

Our Feldmantel M15 has been developed through several pattern revisions, using period overcoat patterns, photographs and direct study of surviving originals in museum collections.

Pattern and historical cut

Particular attention was paid to the characteristic WW1 silhouette: relatively fitted shoulders, generous room over the uniform and a wide lower part that allows the coat to hang correctly without spreading open at the front.

The back features the characteristic inverted pleat, long rear vent and adjustment strap. The M15-specific gusseted pocket bags and period sleeve and cuff construction are also reproduced.

 

Specially reproduced fabrics

Feldgrau wool
Produced in Poland specifically for our uniforms, with the colour and density developed from an original period wool sample.

Resedagrün wool
Produced in Germany. The current colour was developed in cooperation with Bernd Fehrle of Bekleidungsamt XIII and compared directly with original material.

 

Period construction details

Construction details are based on surviving original Feldmantels, including examples examined in museum collections.

The collar and several small hooks are attached partly by hand. Small buttonholes at the collar tab and rear vent use the characteristic fishtail bartacks copied from an original B.A.V.-stamped coat, while the main buttonholes use the zig-zag bartack found on other surviving examples.

Period-style reinforcement bartacks are reproduced throughout the coat, including the zig-zag pocket reinforcement copied from an original examined at the Musée de la Grande Guerre in Meaux.

 

 

 

 

 

Buttons and hardware

The metal buttons are reproductions of original German military buttons. Their painted finish was developed from original wartime buttons to reproduce their appearance, using the same colour as on our Feldbluse M15.

Smaller buttons reproduce the appearance and colour of the period horn buttons used on original greatcoats. Hooks and other small fittings follow the forms found on surviving examples.

 

Lining

Surviving Feldmantels show considerable variation in both the colour and material of their linings. Pocket bags could also differ from the main lining, with contrasting combinations found on original examples.

Accordingly, the lining used in our Feldmantels may vary between individual pieces while remaining consistent with documented wartime practice.

The examples shown below represent just a few possible variants, including combinations reproduced directly from surviving originals.

Complete your Feldmantel M15

Complete the coat with period-correct shoulder boards and rank insignia appropriate to your unit.

For NCO versions, we use original period Tresse.

For a full field uniform, combine it with our Feldbluse M15 and matching trousers.

Sizing

Available in standard sizes or made to measure.

As the Feldmantel is designed to be worn over a field uniform, the pattern already includes the appropriate amount of additional ease.
