Description

German WW1 Feldmütze made from Mützentrikot, based on surviving original examples and period references.

Mützentrikot is a fine knitted wool fabric that was used in the production of German military caps during the First World War. Its construction gives the finished cap a distinctly different texture, drape and appearance compared with examples made from conventional wool cloth.

Our Mützentrikot Feldmütze follows the construction and proportions of original German WW1 field caps, with particular attention paid to the characteristic behaviour of this lightweight fabric. Original Mützentrikot caps preserved in museum collections, including an example examined during our recent research visit to the La Cantine des Poilus in Verdun, provide additional reference for this reproduction.

The cap is available in several configurations, including the M07 pattern with branch-colour bands and the M17 pattern with a Resedagrün band. This allows the Feldmütze to be configured according to the appropriate period and branch of service. If you choose “other color” for the band please specify it in Order Notes

Limited availability

Only a limited number of Mützentrikot Feldmützen can be made from the current batch, as the amount of this particular fabric available to us is limited. Availability therefore depends on the remaining material rather than a fixed production run.
